I vividly remember driving home after my first weekend of coach training. For the first time in a long time, I felt unstuck and clear on my purpose. A surge of energy was brought to my awareness and I couldn’t wait to tell everyone.
How could I be this full of energy and excitement after a 30 hour, 3-day, in-person training?!
I spent the entire 4-hour drive home calling every family member or friend I could find available. Although it was a late Sunday night, I could not help but wake them up and share everything I could about knowing and understanding the power of your personal energy bank.
I never knew or understood this power, but I now sum it up frequently in one phrase – Energy Speaks Louder Than Words.
So, let’s unpack some of this and dive deeper into energy.
What is energy?
Your energy is whatever you chose to bring to any situation – your thoughts, emotions, and actions that relate to how you see yourself, those around you, and the world itself. Your personal core energy is what your energy is focused on at any given time. This can have a tremendous influence on your performance.
Energy is influenced by internal and external factors. It is at the core of what is driving your performance.
Two Types of Energy
For a frame of reference, we are going to define energy in two ways – catabolic and anabolic. Catabolic energy is destructive and draining. Anabolic energy is constructive and healing.
Anabolic energy is constructive, expanding, fueling, healing, and growth-oriented. This energy is behind everything from creativity and intuition to compassion and caring. It fuels your body, your perceptions, and your interactions. This energy aids in moving your forward to achieve powerful and sustainable results. It is the cornerstone of high performance.
Catabolic energy is draining, resisting, and contracting energy. While it provides you an energetic boost to combat what you perceive to be a stressful situation, it is distracting and acts like a blinder through which you only see a limited view of a situation. It may be useful in the short term when chosen consciously. Like if you are being chased by a bear in the woods. But if you use it long-term, you will experience mental, emotional, and physical tolls that are potentially destructive to yourself and those around you.
How do I know my energy level?
Every client I work with takes the Get Unstuck Assessment before we begin working. This gives us a baseline of where the client’s energy level is when dealing with stress as well as under normal circumstances. This common language allows us to work through the 5 Stages in my Design Your Dream Life framework as a team.
For many clients, the assessment results are an eye-opener. Sharing those results often leads to a desire for change. A large majority of us are resonating at an energy level much lower than we desire. We feel victim or angry about our unhappiness. Resentment, hatred, greed, worry, and blame start to kick in. We want to blame others for this but when we really get into it, we have to look inward first.
Overwhelm tends to simmer with clients shortly after a few sessions of digging into limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviors.
I shared last week that my dad used to tell me if I wasn’t 15 minutes early, I was late. He valued time differently than I do. My limiting belief led me to get frustrated when co-workers didn’t show up for work on time. I was allowing something that was out of my control to completely sabotage my day. It sucked my energy dry. I was angry. I was experiencing catabolic energy. And nothing gets done when we sit and stew in that place.
I had to work on not taking things personally. They’re showing up late didn’t affect me personally, it just made me mad that I was busting my butt to get there on time and they continually showed up late with no consequence. Victim, anger – catabolic energy… If I change the lens for this story, I realize it has nothing to do with me. I do my job and arrive when I am supposed to. Letting their tardiness get to me wasted so much energy and productivity.
Moving away from the “me” attitude and toward one that is more about others gives us energy and allows us to get unstuck. We are no longer bound by other actions and instead release judgment and responsibility. We find opportunities everywhere we look. Our intuition is incorporated more, and we are developing a sense of passion for our life.
Raising our level of consciousness allows us to live fearlessly and open. We feel joy and absolute passion. Our world is working synergistically.
When we understand how we are showing up, both under normal and stressful situations, we can start to make impactful changes. Coaching through the core energy process helps bring out the clients’ potential. It helps people tap into their inner purpose and passion and connect that with their outer goals and tasks to bring about extraordinary and sustainable results.
This is all based on the fact that true, positive change starts from within. Helping the client consciously connect with their core thoughts and emotions.
